1960s: Ann Arbor's Gay Bars

Back in the 1960s, as to where I spent the most period, outside of the bars our band played music in, it was

probably Mr. Flood’s Party, where I hung out, and especially the Del Rio, where you could find me. The Del Rio had the best Greek salads with this special sauce I cannot forget. We sat around there. And they sometimes had jazz. Yet I did check in at the Town Bar and the Flame Block, both gay bars, from second to time, and went there with friends, just to sample a different environment for a change.

Also, as young musicians about town, we went to many bars, but also to the two main gay bars we knew of, the Town Block at 212 E. Huron, and then downtown on 115 W. Washington Street is the Flame Bar, between Main Street and Ashley. Although we sometimes went to either of these queer bars, it was the Town Bar that I would stop by most often. Why go there if we were not gay.

Well, it was not that I had no friends at these bars. One of my band members, my keyboard player was gay, whose room was just across the hall from mine in the Prime Mover Property at 114 N. Division. He was one of my oldest and closest friends. We lived together in that house

Gay Ann Arbor

-------------------------------------

First and first this is an American college town. The University of Michigan moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1839, and students craft up over 30% of the population today. Many others work for the University, shaping the whole local economy. In civil-rights movement days and during the time of protests against the Vietnam War this city became a major focal aim for organizing and a center of the counterculture. SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) convened it's first meetings here, and in 1974, Kathy Kozachenko won her city-council race to became America's first openly-homosexual public official.

Today the economy is also supported by high technology companies attracted by study and development at the University, and the high level of education of graduates who persist in the area. The university has attracted a significant number of foreign-born people too, bringing an international accent to life in Ann Arbor. "A2" as it's sometimes called, is also known as "Tree Town" for streets filled with greenery, and for the 157 municipal parks within 25 square miles.
