Porn laid bare: gay men, pornography and bareback sex

posted on 2023-06-08, 15:17authored bySharif Mowlabocus, Justin Harbottle, Charlie WitzelThis article details the preliminary findings from Porn Laid Bare, a collaborative research project between the University of Sussex and the Terrence Higgins Trust, Brighton. We examine the multidimensional relationship that respondents identified as having formed with pornographic material, together with its role within gay male subculture. We then consider how interview respondents understood and conceptualised bareback pornography. Our findings reveal consistent contradictions between general discussions of gay pornography and specific discussions of bareback representations. Utilising Dean’s (2009) function on bareback subculture and the ‘ambivalent gift’, we develop a critical reading of these contradictions in order to identify the methods by which the anxieties and pleasures of bareback pornography were handled by respondents.

Bare Bear Contest
The Bare Bear Contest is an official challenge that started in 1994 when it was first held. This contest celebrates the diversity of body types and attributes that fully encompass the physical attributes of men at the GNI Gathering. For years, the contest was held on an evening of fun in the Auditorium, but when both participation in the contest and audience support began to wane, it was decided to advance the contest to the Bare Bear Pool Party held on Friday afternoon. This contest is the most "fun" of all the contests because contestants engage in silly, fun games with each other and don't have to stand on stage, answer questions, and parade down a cat walk. Moving the contest to the pool party has since revived the contest giving the title holders proper recognition standing for their communities. Surnames have been redacted for online privacy though they are retained by GNI in our lasting archives.
