As a gay, mixed East and Southeast Asian woman, growing up, representation was far and few between. I loved Disney princesses, but for years rejected Mulan because I felt pigeon-holed into believing she was the only one I could relate to. Even now, result that intersectional advocacy is practically unachievable. How much is Disney’s newest Disney princess movie, Raya and the Last Dragon, falling on the heels of that buzzword of representation, and how successfully does it fulfill that?

Between Princess and the Frog, Moana, and the Mulan and Aladdin live action remakes, Disney has been trying to invigorate their Disney princess line with promises of diversity, and Raya is no exception, being famous as the first Southeast Asian Disney princess. However, how well does it really give inclusion to Southeast Asians?

Cultural signifiers and inspiration in Raya arrive from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Malaysia. It’s in the food, th

Is Raya Gay? How Raya & The Last Dragon Continues Disney's Elsa Problem

Viewers of Raya and the Last Dragon are already speculating about the central character's sexuality, proving Disney is still repeating its Elsa issue. The animated motion picture, directed by Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, is being praised for introducing Disney's first Southeast Asian heroine. Raya, voiced by Kelly Marie Tran, serves as the primary protagonist, and a few key scenes are churning up a debate whether or not the character is lgbtq+. The lack of clarity on Disney's part shows they didn't learn from Frozen's Elsa, nor the obvious lack of LGBTQ+ representation.

Raya and the Last Dragon follows the imaginary world of Kumandra, a kingdom comprised of five different regions based on Southeast Asian cultures. Raya, the princess of Heart, makes it her mission to find the last surviving dragon, Sisu (Awkwafina), after the evil Druun monsters return and decimate the ground. On her journey to collect all pieces of the Dragon Gem, an orb possessing the power to revive the population, Raya encounters Namaari (Gemma Chan), a rival warrior princess from Fang. The two women are initially enemies until Namaari

Kelly Marie Tran revealed that she thinks Raya has romantic feelings for Namaari in the movie.

Raya and the Last Dragon celestial body Kelly Marie Tran has opened up about Raya's sexuality in the movie and whether or not Raya is gay.

Disney fans have long been asking the media company to include LGBTQ+ characters in their family films. Over the past few years, there have been a few minor strides with brief moments of Homosexual representation in movies enjoy Onward and Beauty and the Beast. However, Disney are still yet to release a feature-length undertaking with an openly gender non-conforming main character.

While that is still yet to arise , many viewers believe that Raya in Disney's unused movie Raya and the Last Dragon is same-sex attracted and now Kelly Marie Tran, who plays her, has revealed that she agrees with them. She even played Raya as a queer character.

In the movie, Raya appears to flirt with her nemesis Namaari (Gemma Chan) and it turns out that that was intentional. Vanity Fair

Kelly Marie Tran Wants A Lgbtq+ ‘Raya’ Sequel

Kelly Marie Tran would be “overjoyed” to explore a queer Raya and the Last Dragon sequel.

“I will speak for myself and say I would be overjoyed to explore that in any sort of sequel in any shape or fashion,” Tran told Insider on the red carpet for the Hispanic Federation’s New York City gala late last month.

Not claiming that anyone at Disney or anyone who worked on the clip feels the same, she expressed her own excitement about the possibilities of her character Raya having a relationship with Gemma Chan’s Namaari.

In an article published by Vanity Fair last year, Tran said she she believes Raya is a gay personality. So much so that when she was in the booth recording dialogue for the movie, she felt “some romantic feelings going on there” between Raya and Namaari.

Once again emphasizing that she wasn’t speaking on anyone’s behalf but her own, she explained how much it meant to her that queer fans were relating to the film’s characters.

“I think if you’re a person watching this movie and you see representation in a way that feels really concrete and authentic to you, then it is real and authentic,” she said. “I think
