Kerry Rhodes Says He's Not Gay, Not Blacklisted

After a season away from the NFL, during which his former assistant alleged the two were in a relationship, Kerry Rhodes says he believes the gay rumors weren't the reason for his surprising unemployment—and he's not gay anyway.

In an interview with ESPN, Rhodes said "I don't believe I was blacklisted," and that he doesn't believe the NFL would authorize that to take place. Instead he cites money as the reason no one gave the 31-year-old safety a tryout after Week 1. As for the photos of him and his assistant, and that assistant's claims they were a couple?

"I emphatically said no once and that's all I need to say and people who know me know that's definitely not the case," Rhodes said. "To me I'm definitely not and I can't control but people think, so I move on."

Below, Drew Magary's story from September wondering why so many teams with awful secondaries weren't even giving Rhodes a look.

Kerry Rhodes Insists He's Not Gay, But At Least He Insists It Nicely

Lost in yesterday's important news was this "SUPER Planet EXCLUSIVE" from MediaTakeOut: Kerry Rhodes kissed a dude on the head. And not just any dude, but a dude who is said to be Rhodes's assistant, and gay. [Update: We've taken down MTO's photos. See record at the bottom.]

MTO ran photos of the two last week—sans kisses—which prompted Rhodes to reveal TMZ:

"Photos have been circulating of my former assistant and I that contain caused some rumors regarding my sexuality, and I wanted to address the situation."

Rhodes then says flatly, "I am not gay."

Rhodes explains: "The shots were taken during a past vacation in a casual environment with my entire business team."

Rhodes says when it comes to being supportive of gay professional athletes coming out, he's on Magic Johnson's team: "I know a lot of people are recently talking about athletes struggling to come out to their fans right now, and I support them, as well as aspire those individuals comfort."

Kerry Rhodes Gay Rumors [PHOTOS]: NFL Star Tells TMZ "I Am Not Gay" / Vacations with Companion "Hollywood" Jackson?

MediaTakeOut released photos of NFL safety Kerry Rhodes and his alleged gay partner and former assistant who goes by the name of "Hollywood." Prompted by the virality of the photos Rhodes, now a free forwarder, addressed TMZ on behalf of the rumors:

"Photos hold been circulating of my former assistant and I that have caused some rumors regarding my sexuality, and I wanted to address the situation...

A terse Rhodes added: "I am not gay."

Rhodes claims the photos are nothing more than an athlete enjoying time during the offseason.

"The shots were taken during a past vacation in a casual environment with my entire business team," said Rhodes.

The "Kerry Rhodes is gay" rumors approach in the wake of comments from CBS Sports writer Mike Freeman who questions whether or not the NFL is ready for an openly same-sex attracted player.

"Based on interviews over the past several weeks with current and former players, I'm told that a current gay NFL player is strongly considering coming out publicly within the next few months - and after doing so, the player would attempt

Florio also reported four NFL teams tried out defensive backs last week: the Bucs, Colts, Dolphins, and Seahawks. Rhodes wasn't one of them.

So the 31-year-old Rhodes remains on the sidelines, for reasons that don't sound to make much sense. In a league where quarterbacks are ascendant, why wouldn't a team with problems defending the hand over take a flier on a safety who's been consistently serviceable and sometimes very good since entering the league in 2005?

Here are the starting free safeties for the teams currently among the worst NFL pass defenses as measured by opponent quarterback rating.

Washington: Bacarri Rambo, a rookie sixth-round draft pick from Georgia who has 18 tackles. The Redskins are going the new and cheap route. And it's gotten them burned — opposite quarterbacks have the best QB rating in the league against them this year, though, to be fair, they had to play against Chip Kelly/Michael Vick and Aaron Rodgers.

Baltimore: Michael Huff, a seven-year veteran who was signed to a three-year contract in March. Huff was brought in to replace perennial All-Pro Ed Reed. So far, he's struggled. Through two games, PFF rates Huff 67th among safeties in the league
