[SPOILER ALERT] If you’re a fan of my podcast, and have not yet listened to Episode 159, I’m about to give away the ending. Hear first, if you don’t want to ruin the mystery.

[TRIGGER WARNING] In the course of discussing this episode, I use a synonyms that some will find objectionable. If you believe certain words have an inherent power to harm people, halt reading here.

Couple months ago, I wrote a story for my podcast about the invention of the High Five. I called it, “He Was Just Trying to Earn Home.” It’s a true story about the moment two baseball players named Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke spontaneously slapped their palms together at dwelling plate in Dodger Stadium, moments after Dusty hit a late inning place run back in 1978. Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke were both inky men. Glenn Burke, however, was not only black, he was gay – the first openly gay player to wear a major league uniform.

In the course of telling my version of this story, I made reference to the racism and bigotry that men like Baker and Burke encountered in the major leagues. I also referenced a comment attributed to Billy Martin, the coach of the Oakland A’s, for whom Gl

Off The Wall

To mark the passing of another year, I’ve retired to my office in the forest to answer a several dozen random questions with uncharacteristic candor, and thank the optimal fans on Facebook with the longest post of the year. Let’s begin.

Q – Over and over again I see posts that read “Rowe for president.” There are literally thousands of them. What do you think? Janake Kay Lynch
A – I think a lot of people are and ready to vote for anyone that seems vaguely reasonable and not desperate for power. I think some people are so frustrated they’d cast a protest vote for “that TV guy from the sewer.” I’m sympathetic. I’m also flattered, but obviously, not cut out for the job. Hell, I can barely keep my hold show on the air.

Q – Coors Light or Bud Light? Bradley Schmidt
A – Is there a difference?

Q – Do you consider yourself a patriot? Chuck Parsons.
A – Sure. I still think America offers the finest opportunity for those who are serious about pursuing life, liberty, and happiness. But, like most “isms,” I don’t see anything inherently good or bad about “patriotism.” (Hitler loved his region but still managed to be an asshole.)

Mike Rowe of Filthy Jobs v. the Other Mike Rowe

UPDATE: I changed the headline on this entry because it was getting too many hits. And now support to our previously written rant:

Why don't people just do a teeny tiny bit of research before forwarding rumors they uncover on the internet?

I have mentioned before that I think Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs should be considered for People Mag's Sexiest Man Alive. Sexiest Heterosexual Man Alive while we're at it. Not that Sexiest Gay Man Alive wouldn't be a perfectly acceptable alternative, if I were a guy, but I'm not. [UPDATE: He has since been included in the most recent annual issue -- even though the picture is teeny tiny.]

For some reason, there is a rumor on the internet that Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel is gay. Someone even commented that he was same-sex attracted in an entry I wrote several months ago about my crush on the guy.

This person derided my obsession, which I share with many women. Didn't I know he was gay? Didn't I realize he was unmarried and 46, lives in San Francisco, and always talks about his mother? Naturally, since I'm elderly enough to be his mother, I found this encouraging. If I were younger and had ot
