About Madrid and its gay life
With a population of 3.2 million, the Spanish capital Madrid is the third largest city in the European Union. The go up of the city began in the 16th century under the Spanish line of the House of Habsburg, when Philip II moved the royal court to Madrid. In the 18th century Charles III contributed much to the economic upturn of the city by modernizing the public infrastructure.
During the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939 Madrid was heavily destroyed by air raids. After the end of Franco's dictatorship the so-called Movida Madrileña – a hedonistic cultural movement that renowned everything shrill and new – began to come out in Madrid. Gayborhoods of Madrid
Spain is well-known for organism one of the most accepting countries for LGBT+ people. In fact, Madrid hosted World Identity festival in 2017. As an openly lgbtq+ man, choosing an accepting study abroad location was a key deciding factor in my preference of locations. Since arriving in Madrid in early January, I have launch several occasions to visit the major gayborhood of Madrid. The neighborhood or barrio, is located a short fifteen-minute walk from the city center and is located just a few steps away from the famous Gran Via street. The neighborhood is named Chueca in honor of the famous Spanish composer Federico Chueca. It is recognizable for being one of the trendiest neighborhoods of the city. When I wandered through it for the first time, I was in awe by the multitude of pride flags hanging from windows and the number of same-sex couples holding hands in the streets.
However, it was not until I went on a guided tour of the neighborhood with a professor at the Syracuse Madrid program that I began to recognize the historical significance of Chueca. It is completely normal to see same-ടex couples holding hands, kissing and organism loved-up just fancy any other couple city wide.
In some cities, once you leave the ‘gay area’ or neighbourhood you feel the need to enable go of your partners hand – in Madrid this is not the case at all and it’s one of the reasons we love this city.
However, like most cities around the world, Madrid does have it’s main gay area/neighbourhood where you will detect the majority of gay bars, clubs, cafes and shops etc.
The Main Queer Area in Madrid: Chueca

The main gay area in Madrid is called Chueca and is named after Federico Chueca who could be considered Madrid’s first lgbtq+ icon.
The area spans about 1km north of Gran Via (one of the main streets) and east to west between Calle Hortaleza and Paseo de Recoletos. The main bulk of same-sex attracted bars in Chueca are found within ten minutes walking distance of Plaza De Chueca – where the metro station is found.
Chueca is walkable from the ‘city centre’ (Plaza Del Sol) or just a couple of metro stops.

When I first moved to Madrid two years ago, I knew from a previous trip that I was in care for with the city and it was one of the most open places I’d ever been. Deciding which neighborhood to exist in was a challenge as I really only knew Chueca – Madrid’s quintessential gay neighborhood. As I discovered more about the city, I realized that Madrid is full of diverse areas each offering their control unique style. Luckily for the LGBT community, Madrid truly is one of the most gay-friendly cities in Spain and even around the world. In proof, it’s estimated that more than half a million LGBT people live in Madrid, so no matter which neighborhood you elect , you’ll find an open and welcoming community where you can be yourself. However, for those who really want to detect the best neighborhoods for the gay community, there are a few in the city that top the list.
