For over 300 years, Gay New Orleans has been a nexus for everything decadent and alive. Regardless of who you are and or who you love, this is one place where you can just be -and it is like no other destination on Earth.
Here music, art, history, food, and people of alternative ethnicities, nationalities, and sexual orientations all commix and coalesce into creating something unique.
A urban area that doesn’t rest thanks to the fabled French Quarter, which never closes, New Orleans also boasts a laid-back attitude to sex and voluptuary parties every night regardless of whether it’s Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, Halloween or a regular Tuesday.
Queers and straights divide the infamous Bourbon Street, although the LGBT crowd gravitates toward the northern end, with a host of bars and clubs serving up something for everyone. You’re also free to accept your cocktail with you as you wander the streets, as long as it’s in a plastic container – so bar-hopping is not only
Before It Burned Down, This Bathhouse Served as a Haven for New York City’s Gay Community
LGBTQ+ Pride
A Smithsonian magazine special report
For decades, gay men gathered anonymously at the Everard Baths, searching sexual liaisons and camaraderie alike
Miguel Agosto looked out the door of his tiny rented room at the Everard Baths in New York City and saw men across the hallway wrestling with a burning mattress. He heard people screaming, “Fire!” Elsewhere in the building, voices shouted, “This way down! This way down!” But 18-year-old Agosto had no time to find the stairs. A moment later, a deluge of smoke engulfed the corridor. Then the electricity trim out. For the 80 to 100 men trapped at 28 West 28th Street on May 25, 1977, panic quickly took hold.
Agosto remembered where a restroom was and made a scamper for it. Once inside, he told the New York Times, “I grabbed a bar outside the bathroom window and swung to the other roof.”
That speedy thinking saved Agosto’s life. On the floors below, men began jumping. By the time the fire engines rolled up, around 25 men were perched on ledges or dangling from windowsills. “When we went in, we found more on the stairs,” Capta
