‘My childhood torturer grew up to be university superintendent’

A Texas human has accused a college superintendent of bullying him decades earlier while in junior high, claiming the torment prompted him to nearly commit suicide.

Greg Barrett, whose legal name is Greg Gay, said his original surname was one of the primary reasons he was bullied while at West Memorial Junior High in Katy, where Barrett claims the district’s current superintendent, Lance Hindt, was among a collective of students who physically attacked him in seventh grade, according to dramatic footage from a universal school board meeting Monday.

“I was bullied, unbelievably bullied,” said Barrett, who graduated from Katy Independent College District in 1983. “I started out and I had teachers that bullied me, I had kids that bullied me, even the coaches — I had nobody to shift to.”

KATY, Texas (KTRK) -- A Katy dude says he was bullied as a young boy in junior high college and claims the bully is current KISD Superintendent Dr. Lance Hindt.

"I started in 1975 with Mr. Lance, my legal name is Greg Gay," said the alleged victim.

Gay addressed the KISD school board during the open forum session Monday night.

"One day at lunch, I had my head shoved in a urinal, where it busted my lip. I had laid on the ground in the fetal position as the kids kicked me."

He says the bullying was so severe he tried to take his own life.

"Well I went home and I got the .45 out of my father's drawer and put it in my mouth because at this point I had nobody. Nobody in the school system to help me," said Gay.

In the video, posted to the KISD website, Gay ends his statement by alleging current Superintendent Dr. Lance Hindt was that bully.

"Lance, you were the one that shoved my head in the urinal," Gay claimed.

Gay spoke with Eyewitness News and says it happened in the mid-1970's when both were at West Memorial Junior High School, in Katy.

In July 2016, Lance Hindt was appointed to a 5-year term as superintendent of the Katy Independent School District (ISD). It was a triumphant moment for Hindt, one that saw him come back to his hometown to head one of the largest educational facility districts in Texas.

He began the profession on October 1st and, by most accounts, his tenure was reasonably thriving. He backed lecturer pay raises and even drafted a $609 million bond package that won over voter approval.

However, his career took a sharp spin on March 19, 2018. On that day, during an otherwise routine educational facility board meeting, a former classmate of Hindt, Gregory Lgbtq+, took to the podium and accused Hindt of bullying him during their time junior lofty school together.

Hindt was seen chuckling at the allegations, which helped cause the video of the accusations to depart viral and get national news, despite the allegations creature nearly 40 years old.

Hindt, for his part, denied the allegations but others came forward, including an Alabama determine, to accuse Hindt of having a bullying past. There was even a lawsuit that accused Hindt of beating a man unconscious when he was 18. The case was settled without criminal charges.

Bullying can be rife in a lot of schools, but one male, from Katy, Texas confronted someone he says bullied him while they were at school together.

A viral video from 2018 saw Greg Barrett speak at a Katy Independent School District college board meeting and detail his experience of being bullied.

He was determined to challenge superintendent Lance Hindt for his alleged habit while they were at academy together.
