Joshua ray walker gay

The catalyst of Joshua Ray Walker’s unused album, What Is It Even?, was sparked on the patio of the Tulsa, Oklahoma melody venue and dive bar Mercury Lounge, a fitting start story for any country record. But this is far from an usual country record. It was on that Tulsa patio, profound into tour, when Walker and drummer Trey Pendergrass were half joking about what their gospel jump blues version of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Move With Somebody” would sound like, wondering “ what if the Blues Brothers covered a Whitney Houston song?”

At that point, it was still unclear how the Dallas native would follow up his trio of critically acclaimed, interconnected albums, all of which were packed tight with character-driven songs that set multiple national-tours worth of crowds on the precipice of staining their shirts with either beers or tears, depending on the lyric. The third of the trio, Notice You Next Second, led to Walker appearing on The Tonight Show and CBS Saturday Morning, brought with it performances at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and Gruene Hall in Texas, landed him on Rolling Stone’s “Best of 2021” list, and prompted SPIN to call him “one of country’s most exciting storytellers.”

In the Deep End With … Joshua Ray Walker

It only takes a scant seconds of Joshua Ray Walker’s What Is It Even? to realize this is a bold project.

The 11-song tribute to female singers and songwriters starts with an unaccompanied piercing country wail: “I’m cryin’ …” But it’s not a country weeper, or at least it wasn’t before Walker got a hold of it. It’s Lizzo’s “Cuz I Adore You,” and it’s monumental. Walker’s powerful voice packs the full punch of unexpectedly falling in affectionate and not knowing how to handle the feelings, backed by horns, organ, and the same pounding drumbeat that made Lizzo’s version a hit. It’s best to go ahead and buckle up, because the album, which comes out this Friday on Soundly Music, doesn’t allow up from there.

Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” becomes a gospel bounce blues, impossible not to want to get up and dance too, whether with somebody or all by yourself. And Walker transforms Cher’s “Believe” into a country burner, dripping with pedal steel, no Auto-Tune needed. Even before we all revisited “Nothing Compares 2 U” upon Sinéad O’Connor’s recent passing, Walker remembered the beauty and power of the Prince-penned song, speeding it up a bit
