Jason Collins played college basketball as a center for Stanford University where he was an NCAA All-American for the 2000–01 season. He was selected by the Houston Rockets as the 18th overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft. Collins spent his career with various NBA teams including the New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, and Brooklyn Nets. After the 2012–2013 season concluded, Collins came out publicly as a gay man in a feature article for Sports Illustrated magazine. He became a free spook and did not compete again until February 2014, when he signed with the Nets and became the first openly same-sex attracted athlete to play in any of the four major North American pro sports leagues. Considered a “game-changer” for his admission, he was named one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” in 2014.

WASHINGTON (AP) - With the simplest of sentences, NBA veteran Jason Collins set aside years of worry and silence to grow the first active player in one of four major U.S. professional sports leagues to approach out as gay.
In a first-person article posted Monday on Sports Illustrated's website, Collins begins: "I'm a 34-year-old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay.''
Collins has played for six teams in 12 seasons, most recently as a reserve with the Washington Wizards after a midseason trade from the Boston Celtics. He is now a free forwarder and wants to keep playing in the NBA.
"I didn't set out to be the first openly homosexual athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, `I'm different,''' Collins writes. "If I had my way, someone else would possess already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand.''
