Established in 1703 in Barbados, Mount Gay is the oldest commercial rum distillery in the world.
The newest MG release comes from Trudiann Branker, their new Master Blender who took over from Allen Smith earlier this year. What makes this rum unique is the proof that is pure pot still rum, not blended with any column component. Pot still rum releases from Barbados are quite unique as most of the bottlings are often a merge of pot and column, light and heavy, in command to deliver a good balance between fruity and creamy.
Mount Gay also released the Origin Series – The Copper Stills, a pack with two 375ml bottles – a column still rum and a pot still rum – in order to showcase both styles and allow you to play and make your retain blend. You can read about that here.
Mount Gay Pot Still is molasses based, distilled in 2009 in a double retort pot still and aged for 10 years in ex-Bourbon casks. For the last 6 months the rum was placed in first pack ex-Bourbon casks and then was bottled at a humble 48% ABV with only 4920 bottles available worldwide. Free of any additions but water. The release of Mount Gay Pot Still Rum follows the launch of the first bottling in the range – XO The Peat Smoke Expression.
For the new expression, Mount Gay looked to its original process of rum-making from around 200 years ago.
The Master Blender Collection: Mount Homosexual Pot Still Rum (48% ABV) is made using only rums distilled in double retort pot stills.
From the distillery’s launch in 1703 until the first 1900s, Mount Same-sex attracted was made purely in pot stills until a entire copper Coffey column was introduced.
Mount Lgbtq+ master blender Trudiann Branker tasted many samples of pot still liquid, before selecting a batch distilled in 2009.
Six months before bottling the liquid, Branker placed it into virgin ex-whiskey casks to “enhance the spicy and roasted nutty notes”.
It was the first rum created by Branker since she took over the master blender role from Allen Smith in April 2019.

Limited to 4,920 bottles, the result is a pretty rum reminiscent of the past. Golden amber in the glass with notes of butterscotch, toffee, mocha and plum waft through the air when nosing the liquid. On the palate, the liquid is initially spicy, followed up by rich, dried fruits, dark chocolate, and oak.
